Semana 2

Jenny

It was a great week since I am finally fully adjusted to the time difference.  It’s incredible to visit some of the great places that I’ve been learning about for so long now. And although I’ve been in Spain for 17 days, I still catch myself thinking, “Wow, I’m really in Spain!”   This last week I visited the, the Hamman and the Sacromonte.  The Hamman is the Arab bath house, it was used as a place of social gathering as well as somewhere for people to cleanse themselves for prayer.  The Sacromonte is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Granada, where the houses are constructed inside of caves.  This neighborhood is also known as the Gypsy neighborhood and infamous for its traditional flamenco shows.  It is said the best flamenco is performed here because flamenco originated in the Gypsy community.  The Sacromonte is also home to one of the clubs in Granada, EL CAMBORIO, which brings me to my Saturday night.

Saturday I experience my first “club outing” at El Camborio and it was everything I imagined it would be; hip-hop, alcohol, wasted girls, and of course crowded.  But there was one thing no one warned me about… the Foam Party! We’d been there for an hour and a half when club attendants started passing out spray foam cans and the DJ announced,  “No one start spaying until everyone has their can!” In a matter of seconds I was soaked and drippy wet from head to toe (literally, my shoes are ruined). It wasn’t all that bad you know, spaying random people with foam but then some jerk sprayed me right in the eye, ON PURPROSE, oh I could have punched him.  I got over it pretty quickly since I had no choice than to open my eyes and continue spaying! I realized that I am not the best at staying out late, I left 2 hours before my friends because I was so tired, haha! For a first time out, it wasn’t so bad and I had a great time dancing with friends.

This morning we had another excursion, I visited another one of the oldest neighborhoods in Granada, the Albaicin.  The Albaicin is known for the best viewing of the city, the famous Vista de San Nicolas.  It was beautiful! I want to return at night next time!  There is still a lot of Arab culture in the Albaicin, especially in the architecture and the narrow streets.   All new buildings have to follow certain guidelines to keep the neighborhood unique.  I saw a lot of churches in the Albaicin but they looked so different than what I am used to.  This is because they were built by the Muslims who lived in Granada when the Catholic Kings conquered it.  The Muslims used to brick and ceramic to construct buildings and this was the only method they know consequently the Catholic churches where built using brick and ceramic.  Very interesting excursion!

Overall a pretty exciting week!  oh yea,  after 14 days and 2,300 tons of garbage, the strike is over! Finally!
Hugs,
Jenny

Semana 1

Abrazos,
Jenny

La vista en camino a el centro.

After a very long flight, I am finally in Granada and I am ecstatic on being here.  I must tell you that in the last year of preparations, I hadn’t been nervous but that quickly changed the moment I got into the taxi that would take me to my host family.  I was full of emotions because I didn’t know what to expect from my host family and new roommate.  I am happy to say both my host family and roommate are great!

The intensive course started this Monday and will continue for the next three weeks in preparation for our “real courses” that start in February.  The intensive course is aimed to review and help prefect our grammar and vocabulary. There all 11 people in my intensive course, out of those 11, 10 of us are Latino! I am proud to share this experience with them because for many of us, we are the first in our families to visit Europe.

The first week was long and exhausting as I adjusted to the time difference and the Spanish way of life.  The hardest adjustment has been the dining schedule; Spaniards have very small breakfasts, don’t eat lunch until 3pm and have dinner at 9pm!  If you know me, you know that is way too long between meals for me not to be starving.  But one good thing has come from the schedule-I am eating more fruit than I have ever eaten in my whole life, lol! Since I am a VERY picky eater, I am surprised that I am actually enjoying the food.  My greatest concern before arriving to Granada was that I wouldn’t like the food and lose weight. I was completely wrong, la señora cooks deliciously &if I must tell you the truth… I think I might gain weight here! I am sure my mother will be happy to hear that.

On Friday after the long week, the group and I went out to enjoy some tapas and drinks! I had a blast and I’m looking forward to more weekend fun!
As for now, I must go and finish my intensive course homework. We will be in touch!
Hugs,
Jenny
